Pre-Operative Instructions
Local Anesthesia – If You Will Be Awake
Eat a light meal before your procedure.
Ask the CWOFS team if you should alter any of your at-home medications.
Blood thinners – Under certain circumstances, it is okay to continue using blood thinners such as Plavix® and Coumadin®. You may be asked to get a blood draw before surgery.
Diabetic medications – It is usually best to take your usual diabetic medicine unless you are fasting for surgery.
Heart and blood pressure medicines – It is important to continue taking these medications; usually, they should not be altered.
Asthma – Bring your inhalers to the appointment.
General & Sedation Anesthesia – If You Will Be Asleep
Please ask the team member if you need to alter any of your usual medications.
Since you will be fasting, you may have to alter your medicine for conditions such as diabetes.
Come in with an empty stomach.
You should not eat anything for 6 hours prior to your surgery. (Example: If your surgery is at 7 a.m., do not eat after midnight.)
If your surgery is late in the day, a light breakfast is okay. (Example: A breakfast of tea and toast at 6 a.m. is acceptable for a 12:30 p.m. surgery.)
If you need to take medications on the morning of surgery, take them with a small sip of water.
You need an escort.
Somebody should bring you to the appointment, stay throughout the surgery, and take you home afterward.
It is best to have somebody available the rest of the day after the surgery in case you need assistance.
Do not wear contact lenses to your surgery appointment.
Tell one of the CWOFS team members if you have had a recent change in your medical information, such as a cold, cough, fever, infection, or heart attack.
